STATEMENT: New border checkpoint between Azerbaijan and Armenia

Yesterday, official Azerbaijan announced the establishment of a border checkpoint on its sovereign territory, at the starting point of the Lachin road. An official statement from the Azerbaijan MFA assured that in line with the obligations of the 2020 Trilateral Agreement, “proper conditions will be ensured for the transparent and regulated passage of Armenian residents living in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan from this checkpoint to Armenia and Azerbaijan in both directions.”

The establishment of the border checkpoint follows the documented misuse of the Lachin road under the watch of the Russian peacekeepers, to transport new anti-personnel landmines and weapons into sovereign Azerbaijan. The latest mine explosion happened on April 22nd by a newly planted, “made in 2021” landmine near the city of Shusha, severely wounding three Azerbaijani servicemen. The Russian Peacekeepers temporarily stationed in the area have not done their part to ensure its security.

As Canadian Azerbaijanis, we believe that a border checkpoint will provide the necessary security and safety of both Azerbaijanis and Armenians crossing to and from the area. We urge Canada to be more involved in the peace-building process (currently facilitated by the EU), which would lead to a formal peace treaty between both countries within their internationally recognized borders.
