TORONTO – The Network of Azerbaijani Canadians welcomes the end of the hostilities in Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region and the capitulation of the illegal Armenian militant entity, which had occupied the sovereign Azerbaijani region since 1992.
Today, historic peace talks took place between Azerbaijani officials and the representatives of the local Karabakh Armenians to discuss the reintegration of the ethnic Armenians into the social, political and economic spectrum of Azerbaijan. We are glad to see the start of a fruitful peace-building process between Azerbaijan and the local Armenian population now that the illegal militant regime has finally been disarmed.
An official statement from Azerbaijan reported that the first round of talks in Yevlakh, Azerbaijan, today had been held in a constructive and positive environment. Reintegration plans had been presented and handed over to the Karabakh Armenians. Azerbaijan emphasized the need to promptly take measures in disarming the last of the Armenian militants inside sovereign Azerbaijan.
The statement also reported that upon request from the local Karabakh Armenians, Azerbaijan will be providing support, namely fuel, heating systems in schools and kindergartens, emergency medical services, firefighting services and necessary humanitarian services in the next while. An agreement was reached to hold the next meeting soon.
In a speech today, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, helped dissolve the mass propaganda of the past week by confirming that there is no threat to Karabakh Armenians and that any information about “mass casualties” among the Karabakh Armenian population does not correspond to reality.
We once again reiterate the importance of amplifying positive messaging from the region, particularly now that the long-awaited direct dialogue between Azerbaijan and Karabakh Armenians is finally underway. We urge Canada to support the reconciliation process by engaging with both Azerbaijan and Armenia in equal capacity.
