Embracing Azerbaijani Culture in Saskatchewan
Azerbaijani Cultural Association of Regina Uncovers Historical Works at Legislative Library
Being active in the Canadian community and witnessing Canada’s warm embrace of Azerbaijani culture is truly fulfilling. On July 12, the Azerbaijani Cultural Association of Regina visited the Saskatchewan Legislative Building and made a heartening discovery.
The Saskatchewan Legislative Building is one of the most historic properties in Saskatchewan, dedicated by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Connaught. The building serves as the seat of government, where provincial laws are proposed, debated, and enacted. It is also a crucial connection to Saskatchewan's heritage and represents the spirit of the province and its people. The building houses the Legislative Library, which is the first library in the province as well as where the first session of the Legislative Building was held.
During their visit, the Azerbaijani Cultural Association of Regina discovered that the Legislative Library housed Azerbaijani books, articles, and journals. The most memorable revelation was noticing a “Azerbaijan mektebi” (Azerbaijan school) magazine from 1924 published by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Education. Being recognized at one of Canada’s prominent and historical libraries is a proud moment for the Azerbaijani community, highlighting the shared appreciation and celebration of cultural heritage.
The Azerbaijani Cultural Association of Regina is inspired to continue this journey and contribute more Azerbaijani material to the Legislative Library. Overall, to date, they have donated 20 books to the Regina Public Library, consisting of children’s books, cultural books, and cookbooks.
